Discovery Study No. 10 · October 1, 2026
Charmco
When owning the Google category is not enough to own the AI answer.
Charmco has spent more than two decades becoming legible as a specialist in gold charms. Search rewards that depth dramatically. AI discovery is telling a different story.

Measured AI mentions
Charmco is a useful counterexample to the idea that AI discovery simply inherits Google visibility. In Semrush's September snapshot, the brand owns major non-branded charm searches while its dedicated AI Visibility score remains Low.
01 · Search
Charmco does not merely rank for its name. It owns the category.
Semrush's US database estimates 20,617 monthly organic visits from 4,623 ranking keywords. The strongest positions repeatedly point to collection architecture: Shop All Charms, Vintage Vault, charm necklaces, bracelets and thematic collections.
That matters because the discovery surface is not one optimized landing page. It is a network of products and categories that repeatedly explains what Charmco sells.
02 · Durable discovery
The web strategy has had years to compound.
2002
JCK dates the mother-daughter business to 2002, beginning with vintage charms and an early web presence.
2004 / 2005
JCK dates the Bergdorf Goodman charm bar to 2004; Charmco's current history page says 2005. We preserve the discrepancy rather than resolve it without primary documentation.
2008
Charmco says it moved exclusively online, turning a specialist retail concept into a direct-to-consumer catalog.
03 · Owned
A charm can belong to many discovery paths.
Charmco's navigation describes the inventory by theme, collection, chain type and gifting occasion. A shopper can enter through Travel & Sites, Luck & Gambling, Wine & Dine, Zodiacs & Birthstones, Enamel Charms, Movable Charms, Random & Unusual, Mother's Day, Valentine's Day and more. That creates explicit semantic relationships around the products instead of leaving discovery to product names alone.
Object
Gold charm, bracelet, necklace, pendant.
Meaning
Luck, travel, food, hobbies, spirituality, pets and milestones.
Mechanism
Movable, engravable, enamel, gemstone, miniature and heirloom.
Charmco products
A category built from tiny, specific stories.
Official Charmco product and collection photography. The mix of miniature objects and accumulated charm jewelry makes the breadth of the catalog visible in a way rankings alone cannot.
05 · AI Search
The Google advantage does not transfer proportionally.
Semrush AI Visibility · Worldwide

The clean comparison
#1 in Google for “gold charm.” Only 2 mentions in Semrush's “Gold Charms for Jewelry” AI topic.
The topic carries roughly 2K AI volume in Prompt Research. The mismatch does not prove why AI systems choose other brands, but it does show that category-leading Search visibility is not sufficient by itself to produce equivalent recommendation visibility.
06 · AI distribution
Most measured mentions come from Google's AI surfaces.
89.8%
of measured mentions are US
Semrush mapped Charmco across 320 performing topics and 551 prompts. The dedicated report also showed mentions declining in the September snapshot, reinforcing that AI visibility is a moving measurement rather than a permanent brand asset.
07 · Prompt Research
AI expands the competitive set beyond specialist charm brands.
For the seed “gold charms,” Semrush mapped roughly 23.2K prompts, 1K related topics and 2.4M related-topic AI volume. The top brands shown were Pandora, Etsy and eBay. The prompt universe was 39% informational, 29% commercial, 15% transactional, 12% navigational and 5% task intent.
Search asks who best matches the query. AI shopping questions can begin with the recipient, occasion, symbolism or problem—and that changes who Charmco competes with.
08 · Competitive discovery
The missing territory is often the occasion, not the object.
Semrush's AI competitor view compared Charmco with Nomination at US AI Visibility 25 versus 39. Across 353 topics in that comparison, 222 were marked Missing for Charmco. High-volume examples included gifts for women, graduation gifts, Valentine's Day gifts, stocking stuffers and women's bracelets.
Working hypothesis: Charmco has built exceptional authority around what the product is. AI discovery creates additional competition around who it is for and why someone is shopping.
10 · Research implication
This is a useful warning against treating AI visibility as SEO with a new label.
Charmco demonstrates two things at once: a specialist independent brand can build extraordinary non-branded Search visibility through deep category architecture and descriptive inventory; and that success can coexist with comparatively weak LLM recommendation visibility.
The discovery systems overlap. They are not interchangeable.
11 · Methodology
What we measured, and what the numbers do not prove.
Search: Semrush US desktop database, September 2026. Current snapshot: 4,623 organic keywords, 20,617 estimated organic visits, 707 positions 1–3, 837 positions 4–10. Twenty-four monthly snapshots from October 2024 through September 2026 were preserved. Semrush figures are modeled estimates, not Charmco analytics.
Backlinks: Semrush Backlink Analytics snapshot: Authority Score 33, 3,815 backlinks and 649 referring domains.
AI Visibility: Semrush AI Visibility, worldwide/all monitored platforms, September 30, 2026: 16/100, 254 mentions, 480 citations, 264 cited pages. Platform distribution: ChatGPT 25, Google AI Overview 101, Google AI Mode 80, Gemini 48.
Prompt Research: US seed “gold charms,” September 30, 2026. Semrush reported 1K related topics, 23.2K prompts and 2.4M related-topic AI volume. “Gold Charms for Jewelry” showed ~2K AI volume; Charmco's Visibility Overview showed 2 mentions for that topic.
Competitor Research: US comparison with Semrush-selected Nomination: Charmco AI Visibility 25, Nomination 39; 353 topics, including 222 marked Missing for Charmco.
Owned-site research: Charmco's official story, navigation, product pages and editorial content. The Enamel Martini Devil product is style HH274, solid 14K yellow gold and movable. Charmco's current history dates the Bergdorf Goodman charm bar to 2005; JCK's 2022 profile says 2004.
Interpretation: Rankings, citations, backlinks and AI mentions show observable discovery signals. They do not establish causation, conversion, revenue or the internal strategy that produced them.
Owning a category in Search does not mean owning the answer.
