Key findings
Found before the feed
Digby & Iona launched in 2006, when a Brooklyn shop called Catbird was carrying its work. Catbird now has 11 of the brand's 26 listed retail locations.
Search collects demand made elsewhere
About 84% of estimated organic traffic comes from people who already know the name. Search confirms the discovery. It rarely starts it.
Thirteen years of steady demand
Estimated organic visits have stayed in a narrow band, mostly 1,500–3,500 a month, since 2016. The brand's name has kept pulling people in through every platform shift.
A footprint that grew, then shrank
Ranking keywords peaked at 1,605 in January 2024 and are down to 404. Linking sites rose to nearly 2,000 in mid-2024 and have since fallen to 767.
A 2012 studio visit still ranks
Of the first ten Google results for "digby and iona", one is a 2012 studio visit by The Hairpin and four are stockists. Only one is digbyandiona.com.
The Found Footprint & Found Score
A Found Footprint maps every door through which a shopper can encounter a brand: Search, Creators, Editorial, Community, Owned and Commerce. Each channel is rated 1–5. Together they form the Found Score.
Search · 2/5 Minimal
~2,700 estimated monthly US organic visits, about 84% of them from brand-name searches.
Found Score 17 / 30. Search 2 out of 5 (Minimal); Creators 2 out of 5 (Minimal); Editorial 4 out of 5 (Strong); Community 2 out of 5 (Minimal); Owned 3 out of 5 (Present); Commerce 4 out of 5 (Strong). Compared with Castro Smith (18/30): Search 2, Creators 2, Editorial 5, Community 1, Owned 3, Commerce 5. Compared with Zoë Chicco (21/30): Search 4, Creators 2, Editorial 5, Community 2, Owned 3, Commerce 5.
Found Score
17 / 30
Covers six channels. AI assistant visibility is not scored in this edition. Creator and community scores are based on a light scan.
Digby & Iona's footprint looks like a brand from before the feed: strong editorial, strong specialty retail, and a name people search for once they've heard it. The channels that grew up after 2010 (creators, community, non-branded search) are the thin ones.

Section 03How the Found Score works
Each channel is rated from 1 to 5 against the rubric below, based only on the evidence documented in this study. Ratings are an informed assessment, not a precise measurement. The score is most useful for its shape: which channels carry a brand's discoverability, and which don't.
| Score | Label | Meaning |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Absent | No meaningful presence found. |
| 2 | Minimal | Present, but small relative to peers or limited mostly to people already looking for the brand. |
| 3 | Present | An established, consistent presence with clear limitations. |
| 4 | Strong | A substantial, high-quality presence that regularly introduces the brand to new audiences. |
| 5 | Dominant | A defining channel for the brand, with both scale and repetition. |
Channels scored: Search, Creators, Editorial, Community, Owned, Commerce. Maximum score: 30.
Brand & Positioning
Founded
2006, Brooklyn
Founder
Aaron Ruff. Born in Maine to a family of craftspeople, worked as a carpenter and studied furniture design at Parsons before taking one introductory jewelry class
Studio
The Invisible Dog arts center, Cobble Hill, Brooklyn (open by appointment)
Name
Two quiet seaside towns in Nova Scotia, chosen, the brand says, to "maintain a level of anonymity"
Signatures
Signet rings, the Nico band, snakes and ouroboros pieces, memento mori motifs, keys, engagement rings and wedding bands
Services
Custom work, engagement and wedding appointments, repair and resizing
Retail
26 listed locations in the US, Australia, Japan and the Netherlands
Digby & Iona draws on nautical history, old measuring instruments and memento mori, made with a carpenter's attention to construction. It's romantic, a little dark and very specific, and it has a loyal following for engagement rings and wedding bands that don't look like everyone else's.
Search Footprint
Search does one job for Digby & Iona: it catches people who already know the name. Brand searches and the Nico band account for almost all organic visits. The few non-branded wins come from pieces distinctive enough to be searched for on their own.
Where non-branded traffic comes from
Estimated monthly visits from the top 60 keywords, grouped by motif. Small numbers, but each one is a product nobody else makes quite the same way.
Sharing a name with a TV character
"Digby" alone is searched about 9,900 times a month in the US, including searches tied to the TV drama The Pitt. The brand even appears on page two for "digby the pitt" (2,900 searches). The name is distinctive only when both halves are used.
| Source | Est. visits/mo | Example terms |
|---|---|---|
| Snakes & ouroboros | ~140 | ouroboros necklace, ouroboros jewelry, ouroboros pendant |
| Dark romance | ~45 | satanic necklace, blood drop earrings, till death ring, memento mori necklace |
| The Nico ring | ~45 | nico ring, nico ring gold, nico ring silver |
| Keys | ~40 | gold key necklace, golden key necklace, key necklace gold |
| Animals | ~30 | octopus necklace, pigeon necklace, cat buttocks |
| Signets & compass | ~20 | compass ring, signet ring and wax, signet ring wax seal |
An ouroboros necklace ranks first on Google. A 20-year-old name does the rest.
Discovered Before Instagram
In a 2013 interview with Nylon, Aaron Ruff described the world he launched into: "It was pre-blogs and the print market was huge." The doors that found Digby & Iona then are still visible today.
| Year | Moment | Door |
|---|---|---|
| 2004 | Rony Vardi opens Catbird in Williamsburg | Retail |
| 2006 | Digby & Iona launches; Catbird turns fully to jewelry and carries the brand early on | Retail |
| 2012 | Studio features by The Hairpin and UncommonGoods | Editorial |
| 2013 | Nylon profiles Ruff and the studio | Editorial |
| 2016–2023 | Organic visits hold at roughly 1,500–3,000 a month | Search |
| 2024 | Ranking keywords and linking sites peak | Search |
| 2026 | 26 listed retail locations, 11 of them Catbird | Retail |
Catbird's founder Rony Vardi writes that she first met Digby & Iona in her shop's earliest days, and the brand is still on her shelves. Catbird grew into a national jewelry name, and Digby & Iona grew with it. Four of the first ten Google results for the brand's name are stockists: Twist, Fiat Lux, Catbird and La Pistacoma.
Before there was a feed to be found in, there was a shop on Bedford Avenue.
Search Over Time
Thirteen years of data show a brand whose demand barely moves. Traffic has stayed in the same band through the rise of Instagram, TikTok and AI search. Ranking keywords are another story: they climbed to 1,605 in early 2024 and have fallen 75% since, so the site now appears for far fewer searches than it did two years ago.
digbyandiona.com: estimated US organic traffic and ranking keywords, May 2013–Aug 2026
Estimated organic traffic moved from 388 visits in May13 to 2,514 in Aug26, peaking at 7,082 in Apr20. Ranking keywords peaked at 1,605 in Jan24. Jan24: Keyword peak: 1,605.

The site is a well-kept shop with a studio behind it. There's no blog or journal. The stories about Aaron Ruff, the studio and the craft all live in other people's articles, most of them written between 2012 and 2014.

The Competitive Field
Semrush's closest organic competitors are other makers of dark, romantic fine jewelry, and several of Digby & Iona's own stockists.
| Brand | Est. visits/mo (US) | Keywords | Referring domains | Authority Score |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Digby & Iona | ~2,700 | 379 | 767 | 29 |
| Lox and Chain | ~14,000 | 1,584 | 516 | 28 |
| Marrow Fine | ~8,000 | 3,845 | 1,125 | 32 |
| Hellcat Jewellery | ~230 | 513 | 311 | 16 |
Lox and Chain has fewer linking sites than Digby & Iona and about five times the estimated traffic. Three of Semrush's closest "competitors" for Digby & Iona are its own stockists, in Australia, Japan and Virginia.
Community

Few people ask
About 20 US searches a month for "digby and iona reviews".

Product Distinctiveness & Discovery Leverage
Product Distinctiveness
Observed fact: Ouroboros necklaces, till death bands, keys and the Nico ring rank for their own searches. Interpretation: Digby & Iona's designs are specific enough to be searched for, even if few people do yet. Distinctiveness is what kept retailers and editors coming back for 20 years.
Discovery Leverage
Observed fact: An early place in Catbird, strong editorial and wedding coverage from 2012 onward, and brand demand that has held for 13 years. Interpretation: The brand's discovery was built by gatekeepers who have stayed loyal. The question is whether the next generation of shoppers, who start on social feeds and AI assistants, will meet it the same way.
What does discovery look like for an independent jewelry brand that predates Instagram, and which of its doors will still be open in another 20 years?
