Etsy's New AI Image Rules: What Independent Jewelry Brands Need to Know

A requirement for unedited product photographs raises questions about accuracy, custom jewelry and how Etsy will enforce its new AI rules.

A diamond can look flawless in a photograph. So can a diamond that doesn't exist.

Etsy wants shoppers to be able to tell the difference.

In an October 22 email shared by sellers, the marketplace outlined restrictions on AI-generated content, buyer reporting for misleading imagery, and a requirement for at least one unedited photograph of an actual product against a real background, subject to exceptions.

For independent jewelers, the practical question is what counts as unedited when photographing reflective metals and gemstones routinely involves exposure and color adjustments.

By the numbers · sourced guidance

01

Unedited product photograph

Reported in the October 22 seller announcement; exceptions may apply.

2,000 px

Recommended image dimensions

Etsy recommends at least 2,000 pixels in both dimensions.

635 px

First listing image

Etsy recommends at least 635 pixels to avoid lower search placement.

Image dimensions: Etsy's official guidance ↗. The unedited-image announcement remains seller-reported. These figures are not a statistical comparison.

Visual comparison ✦

Unedited is not the same as accurate

Untouched photograph

Documents a physical piece

Lighting, camera angle and scale can still create a misleading impression.

Color-corrected photograph

May reproduce reality better

White-balance correction can improve fidelity; saturation changes can also exaggerate a stone.

Three changes, three different questions

01

A real product photograph

At least one unedited image of the actual item against a real background, subject to exceptions.

02

AI content restrictions

Restrictions on bot-generated listings and AI-generated functional guides. Not a blanket ban on AI assistance.

03

Buyer reporting

A way to flag potentially misleading AI imagery. Seller-shared guidance says reports initially will not trigger immediate enforcement.

Based on seller-shared announcement text. Consult Etsy's official policy for final implementation details.

Etsy's existing image requirements already address original product photographs and certain customization exceptions. The new announcement is more explicit about an unedited image. But an original photograph and an accurate photograph are not always the same thing.

The problem with defining an unedited jewelry photograph

Consider a pair of polished 14-karat gold earrings photographed in a studio. Diffused lighting controls reflections. The camera records a different color temperature than the metal appears to the eye. The photographer corrects white balance to reproduce the gold more faithfully.

Technically, the photograph has been edited. Yet the adjustment may have made it more accurate.

A sapphire can appear nearly black under one lighting setup and vivid blue under another. Diamonds reflect their surroundings. Emerald inclusions become more or less apparent with a change in angle. An untouched camera file does not settle any of those differences.

The seller-shared announcement indicates that other listing images may still use adjustments such as cropping, resizing, color correction and background changes. Jewelers should preserve an unmodified image and use additional photographs to explain the product faithfully.

What happens to jewelry renderings?

Renderings let designers show a ring, setting or pendant before production. They can be essential to custom work. They cannot demonstrate the actual finish of a cast component, the color variation of a particular gemstone or how a completed piece sits on skin.

Etsy's published image policy distinguishes finished-product photography from some permitted mockups. An engraved signet ring may have a finished sample even if a customer's initials have not been added. A one-of-a-kind gemstone ring is a different case: a photograph of another stone cannot establish the actual appearance of the stone for sale.

These cases need more precise guidance than a single instruction to upload an unedited photograph.

Misleading photography is older than AI

A ring can be photographed to exaggerate its dimensions. A delicate chain can look heavier than it is. Saturation can make a stone appear more valuable. None of this requires generative AI.

Nor can a photograph verify metal purity, gemstone origin or whether the shipped piece matches the listing. Jewelry shoppers need reliable specifications alongside images.

The enforcement problem

How will Etsy distinguish a generated image from a heavily retouched photograph? Will sellers have to supply original files? What happens when a legitimate custom listing is reported?

According to the email reproduced by sellers, buyer reports initially will help Etsy understand concerns rather than trigger immediate enforcement. The effectiveness of the feature will depend on the review process that follows.

A physical ring in front of a camera

02 · AI-generated illustration

A convincing visual without product proof

This illustrative ring image was created for Found & Form. It is not a photograph and does not show a verified physical product. AI-generated imagery can look realistic without proving that an item exists.

✦ Found & Form Tip

To build trust, use your own clear, accurately described photographs alongside any illustrations or AI-generated images.

Two distinct image origins. The left panel is a credited stock photograph; the right is a conceptual illustration. Neither is proof of compliance with Etsy's reported unedited-image requirement.

For independent jewelry sellers ✦

Five things to review before changing your listings

01

Photograph the actual piece

Identify listings with only renderings, composites or heavily altered images.

02

Keep the original file

Save untouched camera files separately from campaign-ready edits.

03

Show scale and color

Include informative views of gemstones, metal finishes and dimensions.

04

Review custom orders

Check finished examples and mockups against Etsy's applicable exceptions.

05

Audit automation

Review AI-assisted listing and digital-product workflows against current policy.

Does this change AI search visibility?

Not directly, based on evidence currently available. Etsy's listing policy is not a confirmed ranking change in ChatGPT, Google AI Mode or other generative search systems. There is no demonstrated basis for claiming that an unedited image increases AI recommendations.

Clear materials, dimensions, design characteristics, prices and availability remain useful information for shoppers and systems trying to understand a product. Read our SEO, AEO and GEO analysis for the difference between being found and being recommended.

Will independent jewelers benefit?

A designer who photographs finished work may already have what the rule requires. A made-to-order brand with hundreds of variations may have more work ahead. Large retailers may be better equipped to update extensive catalogs. Compliance alone is no guarantee of more sales.

The important unanswered question is how Etsy will evaluate authenticity in practice. An untouched photograph can misrepresent a gemstone just as an edited photograph can portray it faithfully. Whether the new policy reduces misleading listings will depend on what happens after a buyer clicks Report.
