A shopper searches Google for a sculptural gold ring. Another asks an AI assistant which independent designers make contemporary signets. Both are looking for jewelry, but they may encounter different shortlists.
Traditional search lets a shopper assemble a shortlist from results. An AI-generated answer may present a shortlist before the shopper visits a single store. That changes the question from Can you be found? to Are you considered?
The short version ✦
Three terms. Different questions.
These are industry labels, not separate ranking systems with proven rules. Their boundaries overlap, especially where Google's AI features use conventional search infrastructure.
SEO
Can shoppers find you?
Search engines discover, index and rank pages that match a shopper's query. For jewelry, this includes descriptive product pages, useful category architecture and technical accessibility.
Observe: Search impressions, rankings, clicks
AEO
Can your information answer the question?
An industry term for making accurate information easier to extract and use in direct answers. Clear explanations of materials, dimensions, policies and product differences serve shoppers regardless of where the answer appears.
Observe: Answer appearances and attributed sources, where observable
GEO
Does your brand enter the consideration set?
An evolving term for visibility in generative responses. Recommendations can draw on multiple sources, and the mechanisms are not fully transparent. Visibility is not guaranteed by any single tactic.
Observe: Dated mentions, citations, recommendation context
Framework by Found & Form. A mention is not necessarily a citation; a citation is not necessarily a recommendation. No tactic guarantees inclusion.
What the evidence actually says
Some advice about AI search is useful. Much of the industry's certainty, however, runs ahead of the available evidence. Three distinctions matter.
Documented guidance
Google's documentation for AI Overviews and AI Mode says there are no additional technical requirements or special schema needed to appear in those features. Pages must be indexed and eligible to appear with a snippet. Google's existing guidance still emphasizes crawlability, useful text, internal links and structured data consistent with visible content.
A measured result with limits
In a 2026 Ahrefs analysis, researchers compared 1,885 pages that added JSON-LD structured data with matched controls. They did not detect a meaningful citation lift in ChatGPT or Google AI Mode over the study window. The sample consisted of already frequently cited pages, schema types were pooled and the observation window was short. This does not establish that structured data is useless for product understanding or search features.
An unproven causal story
Independent editorial coverage, consistent descriptions and detailed product information are sensible areas to investigate. But seeing these characteristics alongside AI visibility does not prove they caused a recommendation. Claims that a particular schema, FAQ format or answer length guarantees placement go beyond the evidence reviewed for this article.
Found & Form diagnostic ✦
Five gaps to investigate when AI overlooks a jewelry brand
These are research questions—not five proven ranking factors. They help a founder identify where to look when one brand appears in a response and another does not.
Recommendation gap
Which relevant shopping questions name competing brands but omit yours?
Investigate: Test documented prompts across platforms and repeat them. Record names, ordering and response variability.
Evidence gap
What verifiable information accompanies the brands that appear?
Investigate: Compare accessible product facts, brand descriptions and cited material. Differences are leads to investigate, not proven causes.
Category gap
Is the brand associated with the specialties shoppers actually search for?
Investigate: Compare product categories, materials, design language and the categories named in AI responses.
Source gap
Which independent sources appear in relevant answers?
Investigate: Log cited publishers, retailers and references. Do not assume an uncited source influenced the answer.
Conversion gap
If a brand is named, does the response offer a useful route to shop?
Investigate: Check whether links and product details are accurate. This is a commercial diagnostic, not a tested cause of recommendation.
Methodological note: these diagnostics organize observations and potential business consequences. They do not establish which signals an AI provider uses or how much weight any signal receives. The conversion gap was not measured in the October 17 pilot.
What a jewelry founder can do next
Start with the information you control: accurate product titles, accessible materials and dimensions, meaningful category pages, and clear buying policies. For the foundational search work, see our jewelry SEO field guide and jewelry SEO overview.
Then investigate what you cannot control directly. Compare which brands appear for a documented set of shopper questions; note which sources are actually cited; and check whether answers accurately represent your products. Our ChatGPT discoverability guide covers practical steps, while the Discovery Index provides further research context.
Measure cautiously. Record the platform, prompt, date, market and conditions of each test. Distinguish being named from being linked or recommended. Compare repeated observations rather than treating one screenshot as a stable ranking.
What should SEO, AEO and GEO KPIs measure?
For SEO, use Search Console impressions, clicks, query relevance and conversions where attributable. For answer-focused work, document whether a question produces a direct answer and which sources it attributes. For generative recommendations, track named brands, citations, links, shopping context and variation across repeated runs. These are complementary observations, not one interchangeable visibility score.
The goal is not to become an “AI brand.” It is to make a distinctive jewelry business easier to find, understand and evaluate—while being honest about what current measurement can and cannot tell us.
